Ahryun Lee

Ahryun Lee (b. 1989) is a Seoul-born ceramic artist based near Munich, Germany, whose work challenges the boundaries of traditional ceramics by merging vibrant color palettes, intricate textures, and biomorphic forms into sculptural objects that evoke curiosity and tactile engagement. Her practice explores the intersections of cultural identity, material innovation, and sensory experience, balancing meticulous craftsmanship with uninhibited creative freedom.

Ahryun began her formal training in ceramics at Seoul National University, where she earned her BA in 2011. She later moved to London to pursue a Master’s degree at the Royal College of Art, graduating in 2016. These cross-cultural experiences have played a pivotal role in shaping her artistic perspective, encouraging her to approach ceramics as a fertile ground for experimentation and creative speculation within contemporary art and design.

Her work is distinguished by its extravagant surfaces—often covered with bulbous, spiky, or beaded protrusions—that transform ceramic objects into lively, otherworldly entities. Through masterful use of color, including gradients of vivid pastels, electric hues, and glossy glazes, her sculptures achieve a surreal quality that blurs the line between the organic and the fantastical. Often described as a “delicious ceramic universe,” her pieces are playful, flamboyant, and sensorially rich, evoking a sense of childhood nostalgia while maintaining conceptual depth. Positioned at the intersection of art, design, and craft, Ahryun reimagines ceramics as a medium capable of eliciting emotional connection, visual spectacle, and tactile curiosity. Her work functions as a dialogue between tradition and innovation, bridging cultural storytelling with contemporary expression.

Internationally recognized, Ahryun Lee has exhibited at major global platforms including Design Miami, Salone del Mobile, and PAD London, as well as numerous exhibitions across the United States, Europe, the Middle East, and Korea. Her practice has also drawn attention from the fashion industry, leading to collaborations with Céline London and, most recently, Dolce & Gabbana as part of the DG Generation Designers project during Milan Design Week 2023.

Through her visionary and transformative approach, Ahryun Lee continues to expand the possibilities of ceramics, creating a dynamic and immersive body of work that captivates audiences and redefines the medium’s contemporary relevance.
