Karine Boustany Letayf

+ Education

Karine graduated from Academie Charpentier in Paris with a degree in graphic design and photography . She moved to Lebanon right after and worked as a graphic designer with Leo Burnett. In 1994, she founded “Black Trombone” a graphic design studio based in Beirut in partnership with her sister Nathalie.

+ Career

The design studio had great success, but what had always interested Karine most was working with soil, and furthering the process by which the interaction between her hands and the natural raw material transformed the shapeless into the unique. She therefore interrupted her graphic design career and started experimenting with ceramics, which eventually led her to fully dedicating her time to this passion.

+ Inspiration

Karine’s inspiration comes from nature and biodiversity. All her works are both functional and decorative. Each is handmade and, once completed, is either thrown or hand built. The shapes are clean, organic and simple but certain imperfections give a work its own unique personality.
