‍Zein Daouk

Based in Beirut, Zein Daouk is a multidisciplinary architect with a passion for ceramics and an obsession with creating. Her journey into clay began in 1999, but it was only in 2020 that it became her primary voice and that she devoted herself to ceramics professionally. Her work embraces the dialogue that links disciplines and highlights the fluid narrative between functional art and sculptural design. She explores form through the four elements: water stretches shapes into earth, air commits them to form, and fire becomes the founding act that brings them to life. A harmonious combination of biomorphic beings unfolds, pushing this sculptural vocabulary to uncover a mysterious new species of functional art objects. Her work resides in contemporary ceramics while rooting itself in expressionism through an emotive color palette.

Drawing from architecture, a discipline centered on collaboration, her ceramic practice examines synergy through an ongoing exploration of the fungal world in The Third Kingdom. She points to the unsettling reality of a fragmented world that, time and again, celebrates our differences to the point of forgetting our shared humanity. The Third Kingdom investigates a symbiotic space where nature, narrative, and craft coalesce in these silent yet sentient beings as they tell a story of interdependence, resilience, and renewal.

Her work is driven by a need to respond to complex questions and to consider alternative perspectives. It captures a moment suspended between an unsettled past and a possible future, leaving its mark on the subconscious mind.

At the essence of her craft lies an insatiable curiosity to learn.

“It takes a mind quiet enough to appreciate silent beauty, courage enough not to fear spontaneity, and a willingness to accept things as they are: graceful in their delicate asymmetry. It hinges upon the ability to slow down, to shift the balance from doing to being, to grasp the subtly graceful, the quietly sculptural…

In the walls of clay forms, secrets unfold: nothing is finished and nothing is perfect; all is revealed as the clay peacefully flows and muted words softly take form.”

Zein Daouk is represented by galleries in Beirut, NYC, and Philadelphia. Her work has been shown at The Salon NYC, Design Miami, Design Miami Paris, the Collect Art Fair in London, and in gallery exhibitions in Philadelphia, Dubai, and Beirut.
